10 Latest developments on Cyclone Vardah and Chennai Rains

Cyclonic storm Vardah formed in the southeastern parts of Bay of Bengal just about two days ago. So much so that the weather system gave very good rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Not only this, several tourists were stranded in the Neil and Havelock Islands.

Now, the system has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and the first arm has hit near Chennai.

Cyclone Vardah had formed in the Southeast Bay of Bengal on Thursday and since then has been undergoing several intensifications.

The system had given heavy to very heavy rains over Andaman and Nicobar Islands resulting in over 2000 tourists being stranded on Neil and Havelock Islands.

The system was a very severe cyclonic storm until yesterday and has now become a severe cyclonic storm.

The system is the first storm of the season to have gained this intensity since Cyclone Hudhud which had intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm.

 

The first arm of the storm has made landfall close to Chennai and the eye of the storm is expected to hit within an hour or two. 
The storm is not likely to weaken at least for the next few hours. In fact, the storm will give very heavy rains over many parts.

During the last 11 hours between 9:30 pm and 8:30 am, Chennai has received 57 mm of rain. Chennai rains are likely to increase as teh cyclone remains intense.  Heavy rains are also expected to occur over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh including Nellore and Ongole.

Hyderabad and Bengaluru are also likely to receive light to moderate rains.

chools in Chennai and other adjoining areas are closed today in view of the cyclonic storm. The residents have been advised to stay indoors and keep their phones charged.
