Muhammad Safdar, the son-in-law of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif was arrested by Pakistan’s anti-corruption authorities on Monday at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport. Safdar was arrested as soon as he arrived from London. Sharif’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz was also taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The NAB has submitted Safdar’s involvement in one of three corruption cases filed against him on September 8th. Sharif, his two sons Hussain and Hassan and his daughter Maryam have also been nominated by NAB.
Safdar was brought before a court in Islamabad and Maryam appeared separately in the same court according to NAB officials. They have been under the NABs radar pertaining to properties owned by their family in London.
Sharif and his two sons did not make the trip to Islamabad. They chose to stay with Sharif’s wife in London as she battles throat cancer.
The judge who is presiding over the case had issued a non-bailable warrant against Sardar, Hussain, and Hassan because they failed to appear for an earlier hearing on October 2nd.
Maryam spoke to the local media and insisted that she will appear before the court and will follow the mandatory procedure and guidelines.
Geo News reported that Safdar and Maryam chose to return to Pakistan because their lawyers advised them to appear before the court in Pakistan.
Sharif was disqualified as the prime minister and president of the PML-N party by the Supreme Court on July 28th. He was re-elected as the president of the PML-N party on October 3rd and has since demanded that the people who disqualified him from the post should adhere to the people’s mandate.
