Chinese agencies detected a small earthquake measuring 3.4 in Richter scale in a North Korean province on Saturday evening (local time 4.29 pm), prompting fears of another nuclear test by the country.
The area in which the earthquake reported, Kilju in North Hamgyeong Province, is near to the Punggyeri which has seen North Korea’s sixth and by far largest nuclear test on September 3. This raises the suspicion that the country may have conducted another nuclear test.
While Japanese news agency suggested a suspected explosion as the cause, South Korean news agency indicated a natural quake, as of now, said a report in RT.
Lassina Zerbo, executive secretary of the Preparatory Commission for Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, a nuclear non-proliferation watch-dog said in a tweet that analysts are investigating the unusual seismic activity.
The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on North Korea after the September 3 nuclear test. The tension in the Korean Peninsula has been steadily increasing with President Donald Trump of the US and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stepping up their war of words.
