Three terrorists, including Yaseen Itoo, were killed today in an encounter with security forces in the Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir. In the 20-hour gunfire, two soldiers also lost their lives, along with three serious injuries.
Followed by a tip-off about the group of Hizbul terrorists hidden in the Awneera village, 100 km from Srinagar. A joint operation by the police and army was initiated.
According to the police, three terrorists were killed in the operation. But some managed to escape the cordon.
The terrorists that were killed were identified as Yaseen Itoo, Irfan ul Haq Sheikh, and Umar Majid Sheikh.
Itoo became a part of the Hizbul Mujahideen in 1996 and had been involved in the killing of group commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with security forces, and also in recruiting young men into the organization, reported the police.
As per the security forces, there are an estimated 90 terrorists active in south Kashmir. Last few months have seen successful operations by the security forces resulting in the elimination of many terrorists.
