According to chief minister Siddaramaiah’s statement on Thursday, Karnataka will take at least take two years to get rid of all the toxic foam oozing out of Bengaluru lakes. Amid the already agitated discussion about the health hazards of the unplanned urban sewage system, the foaming lakes only aggravate the situation.
A hearing is in order by the National Green Tribunal on the carcinogenic foam that reappeared at the Bellandur and Varthur lakes after the rain frenzy in the last few days. The toxic foam created by industrial discharge and sewage disposal in the lakes oozed onto the roads on Wednesday night and engulfed vehicles parked along the lake.
This toxic mix is dangerously poisonous and can harm the environment, and it can also cause a fire. According to residents in nearby apartments, on the morning of Thursday, the toxic froth was flying into their homes as well.
In the last three years, the lakes have frothed many times and have even caught fire, but the government hasn’t been able to tone down the issue.
