Ethiopia banned Sending Domestic Workers to Gulf Countries

The Government of Ethiopia has stopped sending women for employment as domestic workers in (GCC) Gulf Cooperation Council countries, including UAE, as per Gulf News.

Ethiopian government temporary ban applies a number of Arab nations, including all the GCC countries, as per report.

Sources at the Consulate General of Ethiopia in UAE disclosed to Gulf News that the ban began a week ago it's still in force.

The Ethiopian government and the UAE are at present arranging a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to ensure the rights of Ethiopian domestic workers in the UAE.

“Recently, we have experienced in some cases that our workers faced problems of non-payment of wages and being denied health insurance.

The temporary ban on recruitment of Ethiopian domestic workers is the first step to weeding out unscrupulous agencies and abusive sponsors,” the official said.

The deployment ban could be lifted "soon" when the labour aggrement between the UAE and Ethiopia is concluded

Over 400 Ethiopians enter the UAE every day. "When they arrive the nation, most of them land in trouble, as they don't realize they are to work as housemaids,” the official said.

Many of them enter Arab countries illegally and become the subject of criminal gangs and domestic abuses.
