Imagine a deep pit that was once a major source of water. It ran dry and was abandoned. Many such quarries all around the world have dried up and are lying vacant. The governments are busy in finding a solution to rejuvenate them. But Shanghai decided to build a magnificent hotel on the sides of the quarry.
That’s right, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland that’s also known as the Deep pit hotel was finally thrown open to the public, RT reported. Also, known as the ‘earthscraper’ hotel, the resort has been unveiled after 10 years of construction.
The structure is being hailed as a modern architectural wonder and has been designed by British architect Martin Jochman who is also known for creating the third tallest hotel in the world, Burj Al Arab. He told Xinhua News agency, “This is such a unique opportunity that gives me some really interesting ideas of reshaping the relationship between city and nature." Also adding that this is the first time that an abandoned quarry has been turned into beautiful hotel beneath ground.
The engineering bravado design has been constructed on the sides of an 88 metre deep quarry. The hotel is home to 18 floors out of which only two of them are above ground. 16 floors are technically below ground with two of them completely submerged in water. The highest floor is at ground level that has a rich variety of flora and fauna.
The 336-room building has a restaurant and sports and recreation facilities including rock climbing and bungee jumping, according to its developer, Shimao Group. The hotel which costed a whopping amount of $287.9 million or 2 billion yuan will be available to its guests at a suite price of anywhere between 3,400 to 3,800 yuan ($489 - $546) per night.
Apart from this, there is also a huge amusement park and an underground lake which will be used for watersports and other adventures.
