Police launch gangs probe into shocking video of passenger grappling with 'knifeman' on London bus

Police today launched a “gang” probe into terrifying footage of a passenger grappling with an alleged knifeman after being stabbed on a London bus in broad daylight.

The shocking clip went viral and shows the two men wrestling near the driver’s cab as one eventually disarms what appears to be a 12-inch kitchen knife from the other man.

It ends with horrified passengers watching on in shock as the alleged attacker flees the bus and runs down the street, with the victor clutching the confiscated blade and shouting after him: “I am an African. You will never take my life.”

Police have now said they believe the suspect and victim are known to each other and are “exploring whether or not the incident is gang-related”.

There have been no arrests, but the victim, in his 20s, was left with knife wounds to his hand and head and treated at an east London hospital.

The incident, aboard the 149 bus in broad daylight in Stoke Newington Road, took place at 1.55pm on Tuesday. It came during a shocking day of knife crime in the capital.

A Met spokesman said: “Enquiries continue, but at this early stage we believe the victim and the suspect are known to each other.

“We are exploring whether or not the incident is gang-related.”

Less than two hours later teenage footballer Abdullahi Tarabi, 19, was stabbed to death after being chased into an alleyway in Northolt.

Later that afternoon aspiring business student Syed Jamanoor Islam, 20, was beaten with a baseball bat and knifed yards from his home in Mile End. He died at the scene.

On Monday Rene Richardson, 24, collapsed and died outside his Plumstead home after being stabbed repeatedly in a quiet suburban street.

Yesterday the Standard reported new figures that showed soaring rates of gun and knife offences in the capital.

A Met spokesman added: “Police were called to Stoke Newington Road junction with Foulden Road, N16, at 1.55pm on Tuesday, 11 April, to reports of a stabbing which had occurred on a bus.

“Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a man in his 20s with minor lacerations to his hand and head.”
