Dozens of tourists in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas witnessed a shocking attack when a white van came speeding into the historic promenade close to the statue of Christopher Columbus packed with tourists at the time, crashing into people. Thirteen people have been reported dead amongst other hundred that are injured.
This was the first attack on Spain claimed by the Islamic State Group (IS).
This attack took place in the middle of an existing Spanish drama. FC Barcelona had been defeated by Real Madrid and city low in spirits, the Catalan government was going through a fight for an independence referendum and security staff were on strike at the airport. According to local media, due to this incident the strike was suspended, many taxis came forward to offer free of charge rides, and many volunteered to donate blood, and hotels even offered shelter and free blankets
The center of the city that is usually bustling with noise and activity until early mornings during the holidays of mid-August, was devastated and engulfed in an eerie silence.
