Four people died and more were injured when a train collided with a military vehicle during a military exercise in southern Finland. The accident took place at an unguarded railway crossing. Two military trucks were on their way to a training site 90 km west of Helsinki.
The train collided with one of the vehicles and three people in the truck and a passenger on the train were killed. Visibility was poor when the incident occurred due to heavy rain and snowfall in the morning.
Four people were shifted to Helsinki with critical injuries and another seven people were taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. All patients are now said to be stable,
The Prime Minister of Finland, Juha Sipila and President Sauli Niinisto gave their condolences to the families of the victims. Military service is said to be obligatory for men in Finland and it is hoped that they will be buried with a military funeral.
