Cristiano Ronaldo wins award for La Liga's best player on the day he signed a new Real Madrid contract

The superstar was given the Alfredo di Stefano award for La Liga’s best player at Monday night's MARCA Awards

Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a new deal until 2021 and is again in a likely two-player race for the Ballon d’Or, but the Portuguese

Now a 35-goal haul with 11 assists earned Ronaldo the Alfredo di Stefano award for La Liga’s best player at Monday night's Marca Awards.

It caps a huge year that has also included Champions League glory with Real Madrid and Euro 2016 victory with his country.

"[The 2015/16 season] was filled with many emotions with the Champions League and the European Championship," he said on receiving his prize.

 

"Today has also been a very special day with my contract renewal and a prize from MARCA, what else I can ask for?

"I'm very happy. This motivates me to keep working and get better in the next few years."

Ronaldo is expecting a tight race in La Liga, with Real holding a two point lead over Barcelona at the top of the table after 11 games.

"It's as competitive as expected, but this is not a sprint, it's a marathon and we are going to fight," he said.

"As always God will help whoever works hardest."
