The new developed contact lens is able to measure the fluid pressure in the eye called intraocular pressure(IOP).Increased level of IOP is the major cause of glaucoma that can lead to complete loss of vision.

Its first clinical study was completed at St Paul’s Eye Unit in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.The trial was done by the 12 volunteers who wore the new contact lens device for more than an hour under the observation of the ophthalmologist.

Results shows that lens was able to measure the changes in the IOP with very minimal impact and little discomfort to the patient.

Glaucoma patients have to visit frequently or twice in a year to measure their IOP which can get easily affected by psychological and environmental factors like sleeping or stress.

The device is made up of soft silicone hydrogel material to ensure it is comfortable to wear.It consist of pressure sensor that detects changes in IOP continuously for 24 hours.Changes are transferred wirelessly to a portable external controller that gathers data and provide clinicians data to assist in the treatment of glaucoma.

This amazing device was developed in association with the engineers of contact lens manufacturer,Ultravision CLPL, St Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.Now the next step is to refine the device towards commercialization.

Professor of Biomaterial Mechanics of the University’s School of Engineering, said: The results of this study are very positive and show that the device is highly comfortable for people to wear and gives better measurement of the Intraocular Pressure.The device is comfortable for people to wear and gives good measurements of the IOP.

This device will revolutionize the industry of the eye care as it has huge potential to provide large sufferers of glaucoma with the important information that will ensure that they are treated in a right manner to maintain the good vision and minimize the damage.
