Richard Hammond Destroyed A £200,000 McLaren After Putting Water In Petrol Tank

Some people grow up looking at supercars like a McLaren and dream of one day getting to sit down in the driver's seat and take the gorgeous vehicle for a spin.

Unfortunately, there are only a handful of people who will get that opportunity and we'd all expect those lucky bastards to take good care of the car. On the latest episode of Grand Tour, Richard Hammond made a startling revelation that proves why he should no longer be allowed near supercars.

The Hamster was put on the spot by fellow host Jeremy Clarkson, who was dishing out awards for the biggest moments and fuck ups of their latest season. Clarkson said the commendation was titled 'Accidentally Filling up the Petrol Tank of a Supercar with Water Award' - with Hammond looking very embarrassed.

The 48-year-old explained to the audience: "It was running low on fuel at the track and rather than take it off to a petrol station which was miles away, I filled it from one of the jerry cans."

It was only when the engine 'sort of let go' did Hammond realise his mistake.

Just to be clear, the TV presenter destroyed a perfectly good McLaren 720S, which retails for a casual £200,000. Heart-breaking.

While he looked more than ashamed when his minor error was made public, James May decided to rub it in by reminding Hammond that was the second supercar he ruined in The Grand Tour's new season.

The first was much more publicised because it nearly claimed his life.

While filming in Switzerland, the Hamster lost control of a £2 million Rimac Concept One, which barrel-rolled down a steep hill and burst into flames. Speaking to Radio Times, he said: "I remember all of it, right from when maybe I was going too fast and went over the edge.

"Then sky, ground, sky, ground, like being in a tumble dryer full of bricks. I thought, 'Oh God, I'm going to die. This is it. I've had it'."

He was rushed into hospital following the crash, where it was found that he had completely shattered his knee and had to undergo an operation. Miraculously, he didn't suffer any other serious injuries and took time out to recover.

We're all happy that he's back to normal but would really love it if he didn't wreck gorgeous cars by putting water in the petrol tank.
