For the second time in a span of 10 days,dis astrous weather conditions have caused havoc in Istanbul.
The Turkish city experienced a massive summer storm with hail and heavy rain. The storm reportedly knocked down trees and caused a major flood that ended up with3 casualties. The hail storm damaged car windshields and window glasses of various buildings.
According to NTV television, a stone wall boundary of a cemetery for Christian Armenians was fully demolished in the storm, severely hurting 2 people. A footage by the television channel also shows a rescue team trying to find people buried under the stones and rubble.
As reported by Anadolu, the state-run Agency, the storm flipped over a huge crane that collided with oil barrels causing an explosion at the port. Hit by lightning, a small depot also caught fire.
Due to the heavy rain and hail-storm, the streets were flooded and caused major traffic jams and road blocks. Istanbul’s main airport also diverted several flights to other airports due to harsh weather conditions.
As seen in an NTV television footage, people were stranded in a flooded underpass when their bus could not proceed any further. People were seen walking in waist-high waters to find a safe spot till the storm passes.
Turkish authorities are taking precaution by temporarily closing the Eurasia Tunnel, connectingthe Asian and European sides of Istanbul, under the Bosporus Strait.
