A Filipina domestic worker will appear in court after she was charged of allegedly stealing the wallet of a fellow Filipina.
Lorna C.M. pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft of a wallet containing HK$5,000 (P31,126). Tsuen Wan Principal Magistrate Cheang Kei-hong set the trial on Oct. 17 as prosecutors prepare to present four witnesses against the defendant, according to Hong Kong News.
Lorna allegedly took the wallet of an unidentified Filipina domestic worker inside a remittance center in Lik Sang Plaza at Castle Peak Road. The victim claimed that while she was filling out a form she put her wallet beside her. But once she checked it again, the wallet was gone.
In her defense, Lorna said she found the wallet unattended inside the remittance center and took picked it up because its owner was already gone. The defendant said she even called the owner’s wallet hours after picking it up because she wanted to return the wallet.
Authorities will look into the CCTV footage to determine if Lorna’s claim was indeed true.
“The allegation is rather simple,” Lorna’s lawyer told the court on September 23.
As the defendant pleaded not guilty, Magistrate Cheang reminded her she would no longer get a full one-third discount on her jail sentence if she changes her mind and decides to plead guilty at the later part of the trial.
Lorna was allowed to post bail for her temporary liberty.
