SoKor announces visa-free entry for Filipinos to boost tourism for the 2018 Winter Games

The South Korean government has officially announced on November 3 that it will temporarily allow visa-free entry for tourists from 3 Southeast Asian countries, namely: the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam until April 2018, if they enter through the Yangyang International Airport, Yonhap News Agency reported.

This is part of South Korea’s bid to boost tourism for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games that will take place from February 9 to 25.

But how does one qualify for visa-free entry? Reportedly, tourists from these 3 countries will be allowed visa-free entry into the host city of the 2018 Winter Games, Pyeongchang if they go in groups and enter the country through Yangyang International Airport.

Aside from this, Seoul is also trying to entice more Chinese tourists to visit the country, as the country’s relationship to China has since improved after a controversial decision by South Korea to allow the US’s THAAD missile defense system to be set up within its ground.

The report also announced that South Korea will extend the $15 visa fee waiver for Chinese tourists with electronic passports until the end of 2018.

The Games will run for over two weeks. Accordingly, 1.18 million tickets have been made available, with 180,000 sold internationally, so far.

Moreover, Pyeongchang 2018’s chief organizer said on Friday that South Korea is ready to welcome the world at the games, including athletes from neighbor North Korea.

“Korea is ready to welcome the world. We will welcome all eligible athletes and National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including DPR Korea,” said Lee Hee-Beom in Prague, during a meeting of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).

Meanwhile, France and Australia considered staying at home after North Korea’s sixth nuclear test in September – which was, by far, its most powerful.

But the chief organizer vowed the Pyeongchang Games would be an “Olympics of peace and harmony.”
