Conditions for getting permanent residency permit in Qatar

Qatar issued Law No. 10 of 2018 on permanent residency yesterday. The law is effective and will be published in the official gazette.

Under this law, it is possible for expatriates to obtain permanent residency permit in Qatar, given the below conditions:

1- The applicant should have completed 20 years in Qatar on a legal ordinary residency permit if he/she was born outside of Qatar. If the applicant was born in Qatar, the applicant needs to complete 10 years in Qatar. The residency duration must be consecutive and should be prior to the submission date of the application for the permanent residency permit.

The continuation of the applicant's residency in Qatar should not be interrupted by staying outside the country for over 60 days in a year and the duration of the stay outside of Qatar will be deducted from the balance of the residency within Qatar.

If the applicant leaves Qatar after applying for the permanent residency permit for more than six months consecutively, the Minister of Interior has the right to disqualify the applicant's previous residency duration in the country.

2 - The applicant should have enough income to cover the expenses of himself/herself and his/her family. A cabinet decision will specify the applicant’s minimum income along with exceptional cases.

3- The applicant should have a good conduct and reputation. The applicant should not have any previous convictions of any dishonorable offence unless he/she has been rehabilitated in accordance with Qatar's law.

4- The applicant should have sufficient knowledge of the Arabic language.
