Doha cooperation with Tehran strategic, long-term: Qatari official

The Head of Qatari Ports and Maritime Organization said on Monday that his country’s cooperation with Iran is strategic and long-term and Doha is seeking development of ties with Tehran irrespective of regional political situation.

After a meeting with his Iranian counterpart late Monday, Mohammad Al-Khonji told reporters that in the wake of anti-Qatar moves by certain Arab states, Iran stood by the country through boosting ports and maritime cooperation and trade exchanges with Doha.

He further noted that strategic locations of the Iran and Qatar in the region and short distance between them have made long-term cooperation essential for them.

Boosting trade exchanges, foodstuff imports in particular, reveals that Iran has taken advantage of the opportunity, as commercial cooperation is increasing, he said.

Commenting on the significance of setting up a joint committee on ports and maritime cooperation between Iran and Qatar, al-Khonji said that the committee is seeking to solve problems and making suitable proposals for bolstering cooperation in this sector.

The Qatari official further noted that he is in Tehran to visit Iran’s ports and explore avenues for investment in Iranian ports and promoting mutual cooperation in the ports and maritime sector.

Al-Khonji arrived in Tehran on Monday accompanied by directors of Qatari Ministry of Transportation.

Meeting with Iranian minister of road and urban development to discuss boosting collaboration in the fields of ports and maritime is among the programs of the Qatari delegation.
