Al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in an interview with Arabic newspaper website Al-Sharq said that during the 2022 FIFA World Cup event, alcohol will be banned from streets and all the surrounding public places. The head of the nation's tournament organizing committee announced that they are also trying to prohibit the sale of alcohol at the stadiums which will be utilized for the sports events.
Al-Thawadi added that there won't be a complete liquor prohibition, drinking will be allowed in "far-away places”. Open drinking however is restricted and bringing liquor into the nation is also illegal in Qatar. He added that Qatar will not bow under any pressure and would not alter the laws for the tournament.
The effect on cultural traditions has been developing worry in Qatar about the connection amongst liquor and the conduct of fans, particularly taking after conflicts at the Euros in France prior this year, most prominently amongst English and Russian fans.
It had been a point of discussion from a long time that how this conservative Muslim country is going to deal with the alcohol part during the tournament and the latest development shows the outcome now may not go well with the foreign fans.
While alcohol is not strictly illegal in Qatar but the consumption and sale of alcohol are restricted. Foreign nationals need license to drink alcohols in Qatar and hotels are allowed to serve alcohol to the guests.
For the 2022 tournament organizers are expecting around one million fans coming to Qatar. A significant number of these could remain in inns, exceptionally planned campsites and cruise ships.
