Earlier this week Facebook introduced a pilot feature called Profile Picture Guard, as part of new tools that give people in India more control over who can download and share their profile pictures. "In India, we've heard that people want more control over their profile pictures, and we've been working over the past year to understand how we can help", said Aarati Soman, Product Manager at Facebook .
In addition, we're exploring ways people can more easily add designs to profile pictures, which our research has shown helpful in deterring misuse, said a blog post from Facebook. Based on what they learn from this experience in India, Facebook is expected to expand this feature to other countries soon.
How to use Profile Picture Guard
The Profile Picture Guard is in an early state and right now it works only in Android apps. The feature will add a blue border and little shield symbol which will appear on your profile picture. "It will remove all the possible way for copying your profile picture", points out Aarati Soman.
You can turn Profile Picture Guard on or off, by following these simple steps:
- Click your profile picture
- Click Options
- Click Turn on Profile Picture Guard
- Click Save
That's it, Profile Picture Guard is now on and it is visible by a tiny blue shield icon visible on your picture.
When you add this guard:
- Other people will no longer be able to download, share or send your profile picture in a message on Facebook
- People you're not friends with on Facebook won't be able to tag anyone, including themselves, in your profile picture
- Where possible, we'll prevent others from taking a screenshot of your profile picture on Facebook, which is currently available only on Android devices
- We'll display a blue border and shield around your profile picture as a visual cue of protection
However, do remember, as for now, your profile pictures can be obtained with screenshot through a PC.
