A young Asian man bit an Arab woman on her cheeks and assaulted her while trying to steal her bag in a street in Sharjah's Abu Shagara area. The Sharjah Criminal Court has charged the man with assault and robbery.

The victim, who testified before the court, said the incident took place as she was heading home after shopping around 12:30am. She said the accused first stopped her and enquired about an address of a grocery shop. The victim told her about its location. The man thanked her and went on his way.

However, he turned back and requested for Dh10 from her. As the woman tried to listen him out, the man suddenly pounced on her and took her unawares. He started biting her on her cheeks and forehead, while repeatedly assaulting her so she loses balance.

The man grabbed the bag - containing a mobile phone and women's clothes - and fled with it, the victim told the court.

She added the next day the accused called the victim's sister from the stolen mobile phone. He asked her about the home address so he could return the handset. The victim's sister said he was a liar and she immediately informed the police who started monitoring his calls. When the man called her again, his phone was tapped by the police. The cops immediately figured out the call's location, ambushed the man and arrested him. 

After being confronted by the police, the accused confessed having committed the crime. He was referred to the public prosecution.

The court also heard the Sharjah Police witness who said that after receiving information about the incident from the woman, a compliant was lodged and investigations launched. They watched the man's movements which were captured on the surveillance cameras in the area. The footage helped the police identify the accused and arrest him, he said.
