Dubai airport porter jailed, fined for stealing from travellers’ bags

A porter, who had been stealing from the bags of travellers’ at the Dubai airport, has been sentenced to be deported after serving a three-month jail term.

The Court of First Instance also ordered the 27-year-old Nepalese porter to pay a fine worth the estimated prices of the mobile phones and the money he stole.

According to the public prosecution records, the porter, whose duties included transporting bags, stole mobile phones and cash from the baggage while on the job at the Dubai International Airport. He had been doing it from September 2017 to February this year before he was caught.

During investigation, he admitted that he was about to open a bag at 1:30am on February 28 when a security officer caught him in the act.

He was then taken to the police section at the airport.

During interrogation, the police officers asked him whether he had ever stolen from the baggage before, and he initially denied it. But when frisked, a bill of Lebanese currency was found with him, which he confessed he had taken out from a bag. He also admitted that he had stolen mobile phones which he later kept at his company staff accommodation in Al Muhaisna 2.

With the defendant’s approval, the cops searched his place and found four mobile phones apart from coins of 14 different countries which could not be converted.

The court ruling is now final as no appeal was filed.
