Emirati racer dies in racetrack collision in UAE

An Emirati in his 20s was killed in a vehicle crash on Friday evening at the Emirates Motorplex racetrack in Umm Al Quwain, police have confirmed.

Videos, that could not be verified by The National, were circulated on social media and showed a 4x4 colliding at high speed with a barricade during a two-car race.

The police operations department received a call on Friday at 10.15pm about the crash.

The victim was transferred to Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Col Saeed Obaid, the director of the Umm Al Quwain Police Traffic and Patrols Department, has urged that motorists take all necessary safety precautions when racing on a dedicated track.

Police said further information could be released on Sunday morning.
