Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down As Captain Of India Women’s Cricket Team

An End To A Historic Era

Harmanpreet Kaur officially stepped down as the India women’s cricket captain today. She relinquished her leadership role across all formats of the international game. This decision ends a highly successful stint featuring major historical achievements. She attended a formal review meeting with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati.  Head coach Amol Muzumdar and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana also attended the meeting. The change follows India's victory at the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup. Kaur also led the team to the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup title. She guided the squad to back-to-back gold medals at the Asian Games.

A Legacy Of Firsts

She announced her massive career decision through a heartfelt message on Instagram. Under her captaincy, India secured their very first Test victory over Australia. She also led them to their first bilateral ODI series win in England since 1999. Her biggest moment arrived when India claimed their maiden World Cup title.  A year later, India added a record-extending eighth Asia Cup trophy. They defeated Sri Lanka convincingly in the final to claim that regional title. Vice-captain Mandhana now appears the most natural candidate to take over. The India opener already established herself as a highly capable leader domestically.

Looking Toward The Future

Mandhana guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women’s Premier League titles recently. She won the prestigious domestic T20 tournament in both 2024 and 2026. The 29-year-old brings immense batting experience and a growing leadership record. The BCCI will likely hand her the responsibility of leading India soon.  She must guide the talented national team into its next competitive phase. The rapid global growth of women's franchise cricket puts a spotlight on these athletes.  Track the biggest stars and tournaments in international cricket.
