Microsoft has launched another Mixed Reality Capture Studio, this time in the heart of the traditional 2D movie industry, Hollywood.
The studio was created in partnership with Metastage, a new Los Angeles-based mixed reality production company, and will give Hollywood exposure to high-quality volumetric capture, which provides a quick and easy way to build detailed 3D objects without cumbersome 3D sculpting.
It allows companies to create holograms of dynamic people and performances. With the recorded content, consumers can interact with holograms in augmented reality, virtual reality, and on 2D screens. In the past, Microsoft has released some holographic video content (Buzz Aldrin, George Takei, Reggie Watts, and Max Frost).
“Metastage is capturing incredible performances that can be viewed as if the person were standing right in front of you,” said Christina Heller, CEO of Metastage. “Whether using a VR or AR headset, a 2D screen or simply on a mobile phone, instinct kicks in and you may find yourself trying to reach out to touch them, like many of us have.”
With the arrival of the studio, Microsoft hopes to help lead Hollywood’s transformation from traditional 2D film to compelling immersive 3D experiences.
