Hack Your Way To Happiness By Becoming Your Own Best Friend

How you treat yourself will decide the way you will be treated. The best secret to happiness, as suggested by many successful people, is to be your own best friend.

Studies suggest that self-acceptance and self-love could lead to greater satisfaction with your life. But it is something many people only preach and not practice. "Emotionally fit people can see the big picture. They know that one mistake or misstep doesn't determine their destiny. They can also see alternatives to a situation and problem solve accordingly," says Kristin Meekhof, writer and author of the book, A Widow's Guide to Healing. They don't blame themselves for everything.

Another trap you must avoid is wallowing in self-pity because it can lead you to a downward spiral of negative emotions and self-sabotage behaviour patterns. Just remember that your past is not your future, and after every dark night, there is a dawn. So don't worry, because the happy days will be back, sooner than you can imagine.

Treat yourself like you would treat a friend . Pamper yourself on and off. You need not be super-critical about yourself. First make a list of your talents, abilities and strengths. Talk about them to yourself often. Let it sink in.

You need to let go of any feelings of guilt to be best friends with yourself. It is what it is! Come to understand that this is the way things are now, and you cannot change the past. However, if you have done something that requires an apology, let the situation calm down for a while, then apologize to help clear your conscience and avoid regret.

It is quite natural to have some lazy or depressed days. Instead of wasting your energy and time over it, you should try to appreciate yourself. Appreciation and gratitude is what keeps you going. Mark Twain once said he could live for two months on a good compliment. Well, human beings in general love and live for compliments. However, as much as you yearn for appreciation, you also forget it way too easily. That is the reason small things take you to a 'gloomy zone'. So, next time you feel like you are having a bad day or that you are not blessed in life, try to recall all the compliments. Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, said "Nothing else can quite substitute for a few well-chosen, well-timed, sincere words of praise. They are absolutely free and worth a fortune."
