At least four people died and 16 others injured in a massive fire that broke out at the 12th floor of a 19-storey posh residential building in Dadar area Wednesday morning. A total of 20 people were rushed to KEM hospital in Parel of which four were declared brought dead.
As many as 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Fire extinguished following a four-hour long firefighting operation, while the rescue operation is underway.
“The fire that started from the twelfth floor of the building was declared level II (in a confined area) at around 8.45 am by the first response team of Mumbai fire brigade. However, the smoke from the raging fire started spreading rapidly and residents were trapped on the building’s staircases. It was then declared as a level IV (massive blaze) at around 10.50 am” Mumbai Fire Brigade chief officer Prabhat Rahangdale said.

The fire, which broke out on the 12th floor of the building, spread across the 13th, 14th and 15th floors of the Crystal Towers, where the majority of people were stranded and got suffocated. According to Rahangdale, it is likely that more people are trapped inside the building, the Mumbai Fire brigade’s search operation is on.
“A total of 20 victims were brought to KEM of which four were declared brought dead. Of the four deceased, one is a senior citizen female and three others are Male. Remaining 16 people are reported to be stable. The patients have been complaining of asphyxia and burns,” said Dr Avinash Supe, Dean at KEM hospital.
Two of the deceased have been identified as Bablu Shaikh (36) and Shubhada Shelke (62). The other two bodies are yet to be identified.
