China Urges Trump To Exercise Refrain In Tense Situation

According to China’s CGTN state TV network, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged President Trump to exercise restraint to avoid making the situation worse in the peninsula. This week has seen a series of threats and counter-threats that may aggravate the tension between the two sides.

Xi said that it is only through dialogues and negotiations that a political settlement can be made on the Korean Peninsula nuclear crisis. Trump is expected to meet with China later this year.

China has repeatedly raised alarm about the tense situation between Washington and Pyongyang and insists on maintaining a healthy dialogue to solve the issue. A six party talk that was stalled since 2009, may be restarted by China although China initially supported US sanctions last week after continuous missile tests by North Korea. The parties involved in this talk will be North Korea, South Korea, the US, Russia, Japan, and China.

China sees this situation as an opportunity to establish their position as a reasonable nation, however, it has not made any attempts to destabilize Pyongyang’s regime. China is still North Korea’s trading partner and is an economic support for their regime.

As a response to Trump’s remark on Tuesday about unleashing “fire and fury” on North Korea, Pyongyang threatened the US saying it would launch a furious missile attack on Guam.
