Justice Served After Seven Years Since Nirbhaya Rape Case

The four convicts of the Nirbhaya Rape Case (2012) Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh & Vinay Sharma, were hanged till death in Tihar jail on Friday,  March 20, 2020. The four persons were executed on 5.30 am as justice finally prevailed after the trial was running in the court for more than seven years. This is the first time that four men have been hanged together in Tihar Jail, which rests more than 160000 criminals.

Sandeep Goel, Director-General of Tihar jail, said to the media that a doctor examined the bodies of the criminals and reported them death after the sentence. A five-member panel of DDU forensic department, under the supervision of Dr. B.N. Mishra, will do the postmortem of the bodies at 8 am, said a Tihar jail official. The bodies have been shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for the postmortem after the execution was over.

The Nirbhaya rape was case was a great awakening for the Indian public for crime against women. On the fateful night of December 16, 2012, a 23-year old physiotherapy intern was raped till death by four  people in South Delhi's Saket area.

The victim was taken to Safdurjung hospital after being spotted by people walking on the road on National Highway 8 near Mahipalpur flyover. The girl was later shifted to a hospital in Singapore, where she died after 13 days.

The entire country stood against the crime unitedly and demanded justice from the apex government. People of every age group voiced their opinion on the victims and asked them to be hanged.

Seeing the entire nation's reaction against the heinous crime, saw a Criminal Law (Amendment) Act being passed in 2013. The government thus came up with stricter rules and made punishments more stricter. The punishment for gang rape was increased to 20 years to life imprisonment from the earlier 10 years to life imprisonment.

Justice delayed, but not denied," Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi said minutes after the four convicts were hanged on Friday morning.  She also thanked the Indian judiciary system for finally giving them the punishment they deserved after committing a crime of this magnitude.
