No pay cuts but Jet Airways may fire 500 employees: Report

Jet Airways reportedly had agree to not to go ahead with 25 per cent pay cut from pilots' salaries but now it has been reported that the airline might fire 500 of its ground staff. Citing sources, a report in the Financial Express claimed that the airline is likely to issue pink slips to about 500 of its ground services staff and also rationalise the number of its cabin crew on its Boeing and Airbus fleet.

Presently, Jet Airways has 16,558 employees in total, out of which it has around 5,000 as ground staff, the report said.

The approximate salaries for these employees , according to industry sources, is anywhere between Rs 10,000 to Rs 40,000 per month, the report further added.

Jet Airways is going through trouble times due to constant rise in prices of crude oil and a visible stress on its balance sheets. Jet Airways had reported a net loss of Rs 1,040 crore for the fourth quarter in comparison to the Rs 583 crore profit in Q4 FY17.

The report further claimed that Jet Airways might also not renew the contracts of its senior cabin crew.

Earlier, Jet Airways had rolled back its proposal to slash salaries by up to 25% in the wake of stiff opposition from pilots and engineers, a source said.

Grappling with financial woes, the full service airline had decided to reduce salaries and implement various other measures to save costs.

However, the pay cut proposal was not acceptable to pilots and engineers.

Amid rising concerns over its financial health and pilots on war path over proposed pay cuts, the airline, on August 3, expressed confidence of overcoming the current issues as it said the mismatch between high fuel prices and low fares is the biggest short-term challenge.
