A Mixed Verdict From A Former Diplomat

Indian politician Shashi Tharoor finally watched both instalments of the blockbuster thriller 'Dhurandhar'. He delivered a highly mixed verdict regarding Ranveer Singh's popular action franchise. Tharoor praised the ambitious filmmaking, elaborate plot twists, and powerful performances. However, he fiercely criticized the gruesome violence and obvious India-Pakistan propaganda. He shared his thoughts in a seven-minute video on his YouTube channel. "There is a lot of propaganda stuff built into it obviously," Tharoor stated. He acknowledged the controversy surrounding the films' depiction of cross-border terrorism. The franchise reportedly faced bans in Pakistan and several Gulf countries recently.

Questioning Excessive Cinematic Violence

Tharoor was clearly unimpressed by the relentless, graphic brutality shown on screen. "There was no need to show so much violence, blood, mayhem, cruelty," he said. He described the graphic violence as "totally excessive and over the top." He suggested filmmakers could deliver a gripping story without pushing the brutality so far. His observations add a prominent voice to the debate surrounding the franchise. Despite his reservations, Tharoor praised 'Dhurandhar: The Revenge' as highly entertaining fiction. He found the second instalment considerably more satisfying than the first film. He praised the storytelling and the way the sequel resolved lingering narrative threads.

The Reality Of Intelligence Operations

Tharoor also questioned the franchise's highly dramatized portrayal of intelligence operations. He noted his own professional dealings with intelligence officials were considerably less dramatic. His interactions involved analysis and conversations rather than spectacular covert explosions. "That's not the world I have ever lived in," he remarked dryly. He concluded that Dhurandhar represents a spectacular cinematic achievement for the director. However, its entertainment value does not place its politics beyond critical scrutiny.
