A Thirteen-Year Journey From Uncredited Extra To Leading Man

Soori will open his new film Mandaadi next week. He plays a fishing captain leading a crew through a 100-kilometer sailboat race. He routinely skipped meals to send money back to his family in Madurai. Today, he represents one of the most remarkable career shifts in Tamil cinema.

Surviving The Chennai Film Industry

Soori moved to Chennai in 1996 with zero industry contacts. He cleaned and painted for money while begging for roles. He spent years taking uncredited parts and background work for negligible pay. His breakthrough finally arrived in 2009 with the sports drama Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. A comedy scene featuring a parotta-eating contest made him famous. The nickname "Parotta Soori" stuck, and directors finally started calling his phone. He became one of the most reliable comedians in Tamil cinema. He starred in major hits like Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam and Jilla. In 2021, he even worked alongside his childhood idol Rajinikanth in Annatthe.

Transitioning To A Leading Role

Tamil comedians rarely become leading men, but director Vetrimaaran gave Soori a chance. Vetrimaaran cast him as the lead in Viduthalai Part 1 in 2023. Critics praised his performance as a conflicted police constable. Now, Soori takes on Mandaadi under the direction of Mathimaran Pugazhendhi. The production team shot the film predominantly at sea, wrapping up in April 2026. The movie hits theaters worldwide on September 10, 2026.
