Woman sets husband on fire due to his dark complexion

The couple got married two years ago.

A 22-year-old woman allegedly set her husband on fire for his "dark complexion" in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly. The incident took place when the man was fast asleep and his wife - who is two years elder to him- poured petrol on him and burnt him to death.

The accused has been identified as Prem Shri, while the deceased was identified as Satyaveer Singh.

The couple got married two years ago, and has a five-month-old daughter, according to local reports.

Inspector Sehdev Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Kurh Fatehgarh, told Times of India that earlier they had registered an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) but during treatment, it was found that the man had passed away due to the burn injuries, hence the case was converted to section 302 (murder) of the IPC.

The deceased's brother, Harveer Singh, said that his sister-in-law didn't like Satyaveer and always used to comment on his dark complexion, but "we never thought that she would take such a step".
