“Wine is the answer. What was the question?”
Being a wine lover, you have probably spent a lot of time, swirling, smelling and sipping it, but have you ever observed a wine bottle? Besides a long, elegant neck, a corked top, and an attractive label, is there anything else that you have found unusual about a wine bottle? The bottom? Have you ever wondered why there is a dimple at the bottom or a wine or champagne bottle?
Yes! We’re talking about that ‘dimple,’ which is in reality called a ‘punt.’ While not all bottles have a punt, most of them do and there are ten theories to it.
The punt helps you hold the bottle from the bottom to give you a good grip as you pour the wine into your glass.
Back in the days, glassblowers used to create punts in the bottle to push the seam of a bottle up, so that it could stand upright.
Some also believed that punts were an indication of the quality of the wine. However, today, there’s hardly anyone who thinks the same. Not only do the punts create an optical illusion making the bottle look bigger, but also makes your wine chill quicker.
Moreover, punts make the bottle more resistant to high pressure and when they’re more resistant to the high pressure they can better hold sparkling wines.
However, there is no solid reason for the punt to exist in these wine bottles and all of the above are just some theories made by some wine lovers.
