WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed the media in Geneva. He spoke to concerned journalists on Thursday about the ongoing crisis.

He confirmed a total of eight reported cases connected to the ship. This number includes five confirmed cases and three suspected infections. He also officially confirmed the three tragic fatalities.

Assessing the Global Risk

Tedros offered a measured assessment of the global threat level. He stated the overall global risk of a wider outbreak remains low.

Health officials quickly downplayed public fears of a massive global pandemic. Hantavirus does not spread with the terrifying speed of COVID-19. A WHO official noted the Andes strain remains significantly less contagious.

Warnings of More Cases

However, Tedros warned that more individual cases could emerge soon. He pointed specifically to the long incubation period of the virus.

He expected the outbreak to remain strictly limited. Authorities must simply enforce proper quarantine and medical precautions immediately.
