Kheda Goilabiyev’s family was threatened with ‘unpleasant consequences’ by 47-year-old Nazhud Guchigov, a police chief, if her parents refused to marry her. She was just 17 years old. She looked stunning in her white wedding dress that was embraced in exquisite lace detail and dazzling jewel-embellished veil—but they could not hide the sadness etched on her face. It was visible that she didn’t want to get married.
Guchigov is the Chechen Republic’s chief of police and is also the key ally of Chechen’s Head of Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov. According to reports, he already has a wife and a son who is way older than teenage Goilabiyeva when he decided to marry the latter. Goilabiyeva’s parents apparently did not approve the union but they were left with no choice when the chief police threatened to kidnap her if they opposed the marriage.
Following the controversial marriage, the public was outraged when Moscow’s child rights commissioner, Pavel Astakhov appeared to publicly support the marriage by saying, “Caucasian women are all shriveled with wrinkles by the age of 27”.
