Shimao Group chairman Xu Rongmao said that they first came across the abandoned quarry in 2006 and at that time the ‘pit was inconsistent with green hills and blue water’, RT reported. This is when they decided to build an out-of-the-box hotel.
The earthscraper makes use of eco-friendly techniques by generating its own power, heating and lighting through the use of geothermal and solar energy. Exploited during World War II, the quarry was shut down in 2000 due to new environmental protection regulations.
The rooms boast of curved balconies where guests can enjoy scenic waterfalls from surrounding cliffs and and the transparent glass waterfall built into the centre of the hotel.
Calling the modern-day structure a fight against gravity, it took British design firm, Atkins 5000 architects, engineers, designers and workers to build. Here are some more amazing pictures of this spectacular architectural structure:
