As per a statement by the European Union's executive arm on Tuesday, Belgian authorities released notification almost a month after eggs contaminated with low levels of an insecticide were found, while it was important to be notified immediately.
Eggs tainted with Fipronil, an insecticide which is injurious to humans, have been found. Investigations have been carried out in poultry farms in Belgium and in the Netherlands, along with other EU countries to tackle the situation of tainted eggs.
While eggs have been extracted out of stores in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany; Britain, France, Sweden and Switzerland have been notified about the presence of contaminated eggs in their territories.
Denis Ducarme, Belgian Agriculture Minister has promised to look into the matter and assures that consumers are not at risk.
According to Marieke van der Molen, from the National Public Prosecutor's office for serious fraud, environmental crime and asset confiscation in the Netherlands, an investigation by the office, of the company suspected of Fipronil use and supplier are being carried out. However, she has not given any names.
On Tuesday, the Dutch Safety Board announced that an investigation will be launched to look into the Fipronil scandal, to determine the presence of the insecticide in the food. Poultry farmers and the government will also be questioned as a part of the investigation, and to look at how well the people were informed about the issue at hand.
A Europe-wide ban has been imposed on Fipronil by the officials in the German state of Lower Saxony.
