Chen’s husband; New York City police officer Wenjian Liu and his partner Rafael Ramos were ambushed and killed in their patrol car, in December 2014. At the funeral, a devastated Chen said that her husband has left the world so early but she feels like he is still with them.

Chen and Liu were newly-weds when he was shot and killed in Bedford-Stuyvesant. IsmaaiylBrinsley, the gunman who shot Liu, took his own life soon after. Liu was probably the first Asian American police officer who died in the line of duty, and thousands of people came for his funeral.

Liu's father, Wei Tang Liu, spoke about his son’s undying dedication and love for the family. Liu would call his father every day after work to let him know that he was safe. Overwhelmed by emotion, he said that it was the saddest day of his life as his only son had left him.

Two and a half years after Liu’s death, Chen gave birth to a beautiful baby-girl, their daughter, Angelina. The delivery took place at New York-Presbyterian Hospital this Tuesday. Chen said that she had a feeling that she would have a daughter.

According to a New York City Police Department announcement, the night her husband was shot and killed, Chen had asked for his semen to be preserved. The NYPD also shared a photograph of Chen holding her baby Angelina, who is sporting an NYPD knit cap.

Chen had not told Liu’s parents about the artificial insemination process until she got pregnant. According to a family friend, Susan Zhuang, Chen didn’t want to break her family’ hearts in case the process was not successful. However, when Liu’s parents saw the baby, they were extremely emotional and happy. Liu’s mother excitedly started to compare the baby’s looks to her daughter-in-law and her son.

The family plans to take the baby girl to Liu’s grave when she is a month old, and are hoping that Liu’s soul rests in peace knowing that he has a daughter. The family has received joy in the form of this little girl, and they all truly deserve this.
