10 Useful Eye Care Tips From A Leading Eye Surgeon

Do you know Ferdinand Monoyer? Well, he is the man who invented the eye test. On his 181st birth anniversary, search engine Google, with the help of an animated Doodle, paid special tribute him. The French ophthalmologist developed the diopter, a unit of measure of the optical power of a lens or curved mirror. Still in use today, it measures the distance you'd have to be from text to see it clearly. Monoyer, who was born in France in 1836, pioneered the way we measure eye sight.

He is best known for creating the Monoyer chart, as well as introducing the dioptre as a measurement for visual clarity. On his 181st birth anniversary, Parul M Sharma, Senior Eye Surgeon, Max Mutli-Speciality Hospital, Gurugram shares with you some Do's and Don'ts of eye care. "Chances of eye infection are more in summers and monsoon, especially if you have been in public places, swimming or interacted with someone having conjunctivitis. And, contact lens users need to take extra care in summer months as chances of infection are higher. Daily cleaning of contact lens should be followed religiously. One should not wear contact lens while swimming," says Sharma.

Do's
1. Wash your hands with soap and water or use sanitizer couple of times a day.
2. Frequently wash your eyes with cold filter water and do cold compression with ice packs if you find the first signs of infection.
3. To wipe eyes, use tissue paper and discard it properly in dustbin.
4. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops should be used as prescribed by eye specialist. You should have separate set of eye drops for either eye.
5. Wear sunglasses to avoid glare and decrease accidental eye contact with fingers.

Don'ts:
6. Do not go near the person having conjunctivitis. Do not share clothing or bed. However, it is a myth that you can get conjunctivitis by looking at a person suffering the same.
7. Do not go for swimming if the pool is not maintained well.
8. Do not touch your eyes.
9. Do not wear contact lens if you have a red eye.
10. Do not share eye drops as it can cause cross contamination.
