What Is Unconsciousness?
When an individual suddenly becomes unable to respond to stimuli and appears to be asleep is referred as a unconscious state. A person may be unconscious for few seconds or for longer duration.
Individual in unconscious state doesn't respond to loud sounds or shaking.Their pulse rate goes down. This is the time when they require immediate attention. As soon as the person get the emergency first aid, the chances of recovery is likely to be fast.
CAUSES
What Causes Unconsciousness?
Unconsciousness can be caused by the major illness or internal injury or complications arising from drug or alcohol use.
Common causes of unconsciousness include:
An Accident
Severe Loss of Blood
Hefty blow to the chest or head
Drug overdose
Alcohol Poisoning
Common causes of temporary unconsciousness include:

Low Blood Sugar

Low BP
-
Lack of blood flow to the brain

Dehydration
-
Problems with the heart’s rhythm

Neurologic syncope

Straining
-
Hyperventilating
SIGNS
Symptoms that may indicate that unconsciousness is about to occur include:

Sudden inability to respond

Slurred speech
-
High heartbeat
-
Confusion
-
Dizziness
EMERGENCY CARE
If you see a person in unconscious state, take these steps:

First of all check whether the person is breathing or not. If they are breathing, put them on their back.

Lift the person's legs at least 12 inches above the ground

Loosen any tight belts and clothes
-
Do check the person's breath and make sure there is no hindrance there.

Check the person is breathing, moving and coughing properly. If not then perform CPR
CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) Instructions
CPR is the way to treat someone when an individual stops breathing and their heart stops beating.
Before proceeding CPR ask the person are you okay? If he/she doesn't reply then start the CPR.
Lay the person on their back on a firm surface.Position the person on their back
Sit beside the person's neck and shoulders.Place your palm over person's chest and then position your next hand such that your finger get interlaced with each other.Keep your shoulders straight above your hands.With your upper body push straight down to the person's chest keeping 2 inches distance for adults. It is called chest compressions. Perform this activity until some medical help comes and perform the rest of the process in more expert way.
So, in this way you can provide first aid to the unconscious person.
