Céline Dion Revisits 1997 Oscars Look In Custom Bejeweled Chanel Gown

A 1,380-Hour Haute Couture Masterpiece

As the first leg of her triumphant Paris residency nears its finale, Céline Dion delivered an unforgettable fashion moment. Stepping onto the stage at La Défense Arena on Wednesday night, the Canadian icon wore a custom Chanel gown. The shimmering silver and deep blue creation paid direct homage to the Karl Lagerfeld dress she wore to the 1997 Oscars. Designed by Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy, the gown featured a corseted bodice, structured hips, and a high slit. Chanel revealed that artisans at 31 Rue Cambon and Atelier Montex crafted the garment entirely by hand. The intricate dress required more than 1,380 hours of painstaking work and features 6,000 jewels alongside 5,000 glass beads. Seamstresses built an embroidered muslin exterior over a padded toile bustier and detailed the neckline with delicate raffia.

The Iconic Shooting-Star Diamond Necklace

To complete the nostalgic red-carpet callback, Dion paired the couture gown with a dazzling silver shooting-star necklace. The piece echoed the legendary Chanel Fine Jewelry comet necklace she wore on Oscar night nearly thirty years ago. That original 1997 showpiece featured platinum and 18-karat white gold set with 1,080 diamonds totaling over 67 carats. Sharing photographs of the Paris performance on Instagram, Dion reflected warmly on revisiting her famous Academy Awards silhouette. She noted that while the new gown represents a fresh interpretation, wearing it immediately transported her back in time. At the 1997 Oscars, Dion made history as the first vocalist to perform two nominated songs during one ceremony.

A Triumphant Return To The Live Stage

The five-week Paris residency marks Dion's first major concert run since she disclosed her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in 2022. After fighting through intense physical therapy, she stunned the world by singing from the Eiffel Tower at the 2024 Olympics. She followed that milestone with a dazzling appearance at Elie Saab’s 1001 Seasons fashion celebration in Riyadh. Now, her Paris residency proves the legendary vocalist remains in full command of her voice and style. Stay connected to the world of haute couture, live music, and celebrity milestones.
