Nations safely repatriated dozens of passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship today. The Dutch vessel arrived at the Canary Islands early Monday morning.
Managing the Outbreak
The ship departed South America last month before a deadly outbreak struck. Three passengers tragically died after contracting a rare Andes Hantavirus strain.
Health officials successfully transferred the remaining 147 passengers and crew ashore. They used small boats to manage the complex operation safely. Medical teams boarded the vessel first to test everyone before disembarkation.
Strict Quarantine Protocols
Different countries enforced unique quarantine protocols for their returning citizens. Spanish authorities flew 14 citizens to a military hospital in Madrid for strict isolation.
The United Kingdom sent 20 passengers to Arrowe Park Hospital near Liverpool. They face a mandatory 45-day isolation period there. France hospitalized five returning citizens, placing one symptomatic patient in strict isolation immediately.
The United States opted for a slightly different approach. Officials sent 18 asymptomatic passengers to Nebraska for specialized monitoring without mandatory quarantine.
A Low Public Risk
Global health authorities stress that this virus does not threaten the general public. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the public risk remains extremely low. He explicitly stated that Hantavirus does not behave like COVID-19.
