Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Arrives in China Amid Conflict

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in China today. He kicked off a vital four day official visit in Hangzhou. The ongoing Middle East war heavily overshadows this important diplomatic trip.

Brokering Middle East Peace

Pakistan currently acts as a central mediator between the United States and Iran. Sharif recently hosted direct talks attempting to broker a lasting agreement. The Pakistani army chief also traveled to Tehran to facilitate discussions.

Chinese officials stated the leaders will discuss issues of common concern. Beijing desperately wants to restore peace and stability in the Middle East quickly. China strongly supports Pakistan playing a fair mediating role right now.

China Offers Strategic Help

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently offered to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump praised this helpful offer after his own Beijing visit. The closed oil route currently harms the global economy severely.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also urged Pakistan to step up mediation efforts. He spoke directly with his Pakistani counterpart on the phone recently.

Expanding Economic Cooperation

The Pakistani delegation includes the foreign planning and information ministers. Sharif will attend a major business forum during his stay in Hangzhou. He will also visit the Alibaba headquarters to discuss future investments.

Sharif will travel to Beijing later this week. He will hold high level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping there.
