Smoking/alcohol/drugs
Alcohol consumption is frowned upon in Qatar. However, luxury hotels are allowed to serve liquor to their adult non-Muslim customers. Alcohol can be obtained with a permit and only for personal consumption in their own residence. Public drinking is punishable by law. Use or distribution of drugs is dealt with severe implications and is not tolerated under any circumstance.
Behavior / Dress code in Qatar
Expats are advised to be respectful of Islamic laws and regulations, as well as of their sentimental values and customs. Dressing humbly and modestly will go a long way in building positive and earnest relationships with the locals.
Abusive or obscene behavior in public is dealt with severity and should be avoided seriously. Behaving in the utmost respectful way in public will be equally respected by the locals. Homosexuality is not accepted by the law and will be a punishable offense if observed.
Women's Rights
Women in Qatar have their rights placed in a just manner. They can vote and run for public office. There are many Qatari women in leadership positions in ministries and supreme councils. Women are allowed to drive, even without a male companion. The women of Qatar are expected to wear the ‘abaya’, however, the expat women have no formal restrictions as long as they dress modestly and respectfully.
Given the strict laws and a zero-tolerance policy towards criminal offense of various nature, there has been a very low incidence of crime. It is safe to say that Qatar is relatively a trouble-free nation. If you go to the country fully aware of its laws and are respectful towards the same, you will be joining the community of Qatar’ responsible population; locals and expats combined.
