Do You Want to Try Out a Fish Spa? Know The Risks first—and learn the safest way to relax!

Make sure that your spa is safe.

Everybody would love to have a relaxing day at a spa. It is a time to relax, bathe, and exfoliate dry and dead skin accumulated during the time you haven’t been to a Spa. One particularly famous way for exfoliating dead skin, especially on the feet, is to go to a fish spa. A fish spa isn’t a place where fish get to have a relaxing massage, but instead, fish are used to help you relax. But is it actually safe?

Apparently, Fish Spas have been banned in many parts of the US, Canada and Europe, over hygiene and health concerns. Why, you ask? Well, while you’re feet are submerged and the fish ‘chew’ on your dead skin, you’d probably think that’s healthy—I mean you’re getting rid of dead skin cells anyway, right? But have you ever thought that maybe a lot of people’s feet has been submerged in the same water?

Not only is there a risk of acquiring bacteria from other people’s feet, but the fish’s dirt and excretions are also mixed into the water. Gross, right? But unless the spa’s staff frequently change the waters inside the tank or pool, this isn’t much of a problem.

Also, make sure that you don’t have broken skin or open wounds where bacteria can enter your body. Make sure that your body is as clean as the water inside the tank/pool.
