The couple were married for 65 years and were both suffering from age related ailments. Nic Elderhorst suffered a stroke in 2012, and his wife Trees was recently diagnosed with dementia. On learning about the difficult path full of suffering that lay ahead of them, the 91-year-old couple approached the council for seeking permission to die together Elderhorst’s daughter, stood through the entire legal process and said that her parents’ deepest wish was to die together. Euthanasia is the process of assisted suicide that helps people who are terminally ill to have a peaceful death instead of suffering through it for a long period of time. Euthanasia has been a topic of debate for a long time, and The Netherlands was the first country to legalize euthanasia in 2002. Despite this, the number of euthanasia cases that are allowed in Netherlands is very low. According to reports, only 6000 of the 15000 euthanasia requests are granted by law. This is one of the reasons that the double euthanasia case is being called a rare phenomenon as the couple fit the criteria to be granted assisted suicide.
