Illegal item stored in condoms lands UAE passenger in jail

He was a transit passenger travelling to Egypt via Dubai.

A traveller, who allegedly tried to smuggle cocaine in condoms through a Dubai airport, was charged here on Monday.

The 49-year-old man, a Peruvian, denied at the Court of First Instance a charge of drug smuggling in transit.

According to public prosecution records, the defendant was a transit passenger travelling to Egypt through the Dubai International Airport on February 10, this year, when he was arrested after a large quantity of drugs were found in his luggage. The customs inspectors searched his baggage and found white powder suspected to be cocaine he tried to smuggle in condoms.

He was then referred to the anti-narcotics directorate of the Dubai Police.

According to the crime lab report, the quantity seized from the defendant was cocaine and weighed 2.3kg.

The trial will continue on April 22.
