Middle East Conflicts: Riyadh Airport Hit Again As US Weighs Action

Tracking The Regional Escalation

The Saudi-led coalition reported another projectile strike at Riyadh’s international airport today. The unidentified projectile struck a passenger terminal, immediately sparking a dangerous fire. On Saturday, a massive attack on King Khalid International Airport killed 12 people. The Saudi-led coalition blamed Iran-backed Houthi rebels for the brutal, coordinated assault. They described the attack as a fully-fledged war crime against innocent civilians. The coalition vowed a decisive and overwhelming military response to the deadly incident. US President Donald Trump stated Washington is considering joining Saudi retaliatory strikes. This announcement raises severe fears of a wider escalation in the ongoing war.

Intercepting Further Attacks

The Saudi-led military coalition intercepted and destroyed another ballistic missile on Monday. Pro-Iranian Houthi fighters fired the missile towards the southern city of Khamis Mushait. The US military also ramped up enforcement of its strict naval blockade. They disabled four commercial vessels and turned around 135 ships recently. A drone also hit a crude oil tanker near Sohar Anchorage off Oman. The UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed the attack on the commercial vessel. Two Indian seafarers remain missing following the strike on the oil tanker. Meanwhile, Iran claims the US accepted some of its conditions for a ceasefire.

Diplomacy Amidst Chaos

Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei called Washington’s overall response to the proposal "inadequate." Iran offered to restore normal shipping within seven days under certain conditions. The US responded to the Iranian proposal through designated Qatari intermediaries. Saudi Arabia’s Health Minister visited patients injured in the airport attack on Sunday. He reaffirmed the health system’s commitment to providing excellent medical care. The Saudi Embassy in Qatar announced bus services for stranded Saudi citizens.
