Maintaining a vegetable farm by providing ideal temperature, water, air circulation, sunlight through technology and tapping maximum yield is now a regular practice of many young farmers in Al Shahaniya, Al Khor and Al Shamal.

Inspired by Agriculture Department under the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and strong market network, a large number of young farmers have expanded greenhouse farming using locally-developed technology.

Many among them have potential to export their quality products to Europe and friendly countries in the Gulf region in near future.

Speaking to QT at an event in Doha recently, Director of Al Tahaluf Food Stuff and Agrico Greenhouses, Nasser al Khalaf said, “Producing vegetables all around the year with locally-developed technology was our target. After considerable research, we have developed fully automated greenhouses ideal to local weather resulting in manifold growth in quality production. Currently, we are exporting our products to Kuwait and Oman and we’ll soon start exporting to Europe. We are also planning to expand the total greenhouse area to one million square metres by 2021”

In an effort to make the production a year-round affair, many of the farmers have also shifted from conventional method of cultivation to fully-automated greenhouses. 

“Now, we are offering this technology to other farmers. Most of the materials used for manufacturing greenhouses are local. Now, the greenhouse set up by us is one of the best in the world. According to the latest technology available in the market, farmers can control the climate in greenhouse with a remote control without visiting physically. Temperature, sunlight radiation, irrigation system, air circulation- everything can be controlled through a remote-control system. So, we are trying communicating with plants through technology and making each plant healthy and comfortable to provide quality products,” Khalaf said.
